But did you know that the world’s leading brand of cable protection systems also produce their range of products in colour?

PMA are recognised as pioneers of the industry. Their unique products are acknowledged and respected as being durable, flexible, easy to install, and resistant to weather, termites and rats. Now, PMA are proud to add colour to that list.

Whilst PMA will continue to produce high quality conduits and fittings in grey and black as standard, customers will now be able to choose from a selection of colours. Past requests have included blue, green, red, orange and white.

Why get colourful? PMA products are implemented in diverse industries and applications all around the world. The customer-focused company understand that certain designs and applications would benefit from the versatility of a varied conduit colour scheme.

Within certain sectors, coloured conduits are currently being utilized for identification purposes. Different industries are in the process of developing their own colour coding system. The IT Industry are known to use yellow for fibre optic cables, blue for data rooms and orange for electrical cables, while the Construction industry use yellow cable protection to identify gas.

Freedom to be colourful – For those planning to implement a new system or infrastructure around an existing one, the opportunity to use a variety of coloured protection cables could be an ideal solution in distinguishing projects. Whilst offering a flexible and reliable method of recording critical implementation details.

Coloured conduits can also be used creatively as a design feature, or simply as a practical decision. However you determine which colour will suit your application, PMA believe their extended colour palette offers an exciting edge for flexible planning, design, and application of all your projects.

Due to the specialist nature, all orders of coloured conduits and fittings are bespoke, and made to your applications individual specification.

Want to get colourful? If you would like to discuss PMA coloured conduits and fittings in further detail, and discover more about the versatility and range of characteristics of coloured products, PMA customer services would be delighted to take your call.

The City East project involves the modernisation of the safety and communications technology in approximately one third of the entire Hamburg underground network. As Germany’s second largest city, this is no mean feat. Conducted in four stages of construction, the build is due for completion later this year.

No stranger to trackside and rolling stock, PMA has seen its products implemented on railways all over the world, from mountain-tops to urban jungles and vast stretches of rail lines in between. Favoured for the protection of power, control and communications cable, approximately 70km of PMA’s flexible, durable and easily installed nylon conduit will be required for this development, as well as 9,000 additional fittings.

The cable protection system is currently being installed by Siemens Rail Automation, as engineers complete phase one of this extensive project. And we’re delighted to report that not only has praise been received from our partners on the build for the quick and simple assembly of PMA’s systems, the wide selection of assorted terminations and the fast customer service has also been noted.

PMA has really come into its own on this incredible project, with our conduit proving of immense value considering the high fire protection requirements, particularly in tunnels, by the regional building inspection authority. In the tunnels, grey PACO and LLPF conduits are being used, while for outdoor areas black PACO and VCS are being installed. For connection purposes BVNDZ fittings and BVND-SN adapters, both specially developed for trackside application, are in use as well as the standard NVNZ fittings.

As Germany’s leading port and home to many large names in the commercial, manufacturing and media industries, as well as just under 2million people, it is essential that Hamburg Hochbahn’s new rail network is built to a durable, high quality spec. With around 200 million passengers each year, PMA has been chosen as one of the world’s most popular cable protection systems to ensure the essential wiring linking signals and vital communication systems on the city’s S-Bahn railway are protected.

With no alternative tramway or light rail system like so many European cities, even greater dependence has been placed upon the effectiveness of this new development. And with such dramatic plans, more S-Bahn expansion projects may be afoot for which PMA hopes it will also be a part.

Attending Infarail this year? PMA are exhibiting on stand K25, so come along to see our range of products for similar solutions for the UK rail network.
Able to withstand wide variations in temperature (from (-100°C to +170°C continuous,
+200°C for 5000 hours), PMAFLEX Pro conduit type PSX incorporates the latest engineering plastics which have been combined to achieve ground-breaking performance levels. The new cable protection from PMA offers a high fire safety performance and resistance to nuclear radiation – making PSX ideal for applications in the power sector.

Our clients and associates know how proud we are of our ground-breaking systems, which have been formed to comply with the very latest rules, regulations and restrictions in mind to offer solutions to companies in all industries.

Over the past thirty years, engineers at our Swiss HQ have tried and tested materials and technical processes to produce fantastic, unique products. PSX is no different; manufactured from a specially modified Polyetherimide raw material, among its many benefits, the conduit also meets the highest levels of performance regarding flammability (it even self extinguishes!), smoke emission and toxicity. The conduit has extremely good insulation characteristics and resistance levels, whilst also retaining flexibility whilst remaining true to the PMA standard of easy installation.

Just when you thought we couldn’t tick any more boxes, this great new product out-performs all the rest. Compatible with PMAFIX Pro, PMAFIX and PMA Smart Line, PMAFLEX Pro conduit type PSX is available in the standard normal widths NW10 to NW48, both in black.

For more information, click here or download the product information here: PMA_PSX_Datasheet.
A new function has been added to the PMA website which is set to make life easier for all their customers when searching online for specific products.

Previously in order to access the CAD file for a particular PMA component, the procedure was to enter the CADENAS system via the download area of the website and then use the menu to search for the part required. However, if the customer is at a loss as to which product category the part belongs, they may have had difficulty finding it.

Recognising the issue, PMA have introduced a new function which will make the process far simpler to use. Now in the <a href="http://www.pma.ch/pma_com/products.html"target="_blank">Product Information area of the website you will see, in addition to the possibility of downloading the data sheet and catalogue for specific products, it is now also possible to jump straight to the CAD files for the product in question.

This is the perfect time-saver for PMA’s customer base, making finding what they need possible at the touch of a button. Simples!

The Swiss headquarters of PMA have recently undergone a transformation which puts them top of the bill when it comes to being green.

Solar panels installed upon PMA's headquarters make it the largest project of its kind in the Zurich highland region

Having begun the installation of almost 250 solar panels back in the autumn of 2011, the rooftop system at PMA’s main office in Uster, Switzerland, has revolutionised the building’s power supply.

The development is the largest of its kind in the Zurich highland region, with a whopping 241 panels installed, providing a surface area of around 400 square meters. This grand design has the capacity to supply 15 households with electrical power and PMA nylon cable protection systems have been incorporated into the project to aid its longevity and durability against the elements.

Forward-thinking PMA Manager, Bruno Krauer, first had the idea of fitting a solar energy system on top of the building back in 2006. After discussions with various installation companies, as well as the Swiss government authorities regarding the rate paid for energy fed into the network, by the beginning of 2011 all that remained was to convince the directors of PMA’s new owner Thomas & Betts that the investment was worthwhile.

Be-Netz, the largest and best-known company in the solar panel business, was chosen to implement the installation using PMA’s photovoltaic system, which had been designed to stand up against UV and weather exposure. Indeed, the product’s fire-resistant qualities also proved of great value, when the local building regulations office threatened to halt the project for fear of potential risks associated with voltage levels.

Philip Allington, PMA’s Application & Development Manager said:

“We are delighted with the solar system that has been successfully installed, particularly as it incorporates our specialist products, without which, this project would not have taken place. The PMA multilayer conduit type XSOLL has impressed Be-Netz so much, they are now using the PMA conduit type for future installations.”

Manufactured from high-grade, specially modified polyamide materials, PMA AG cable protection systems have triumphed in evaluations for their suitability for use in desert conditions.

PMA products excel in desert conditions

As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cable protection systems, PMA have put their polyamide range of products to the test in some of the toughest conditions on the planet; from snow-topped mountain railways to pest-ridden environments – but now, PMA have one more box ticked, which supports the use of their products in many new areas.

Desert conditions present extremes of temperature, as well as an additional list of complications. In the day, dry, hot conditions can be expected with high UV exposure. At night, temperatures can sink far into minus figures. Add to this the need for a reliable, strong system which requires minimum maintenance and the search for a product to fit the bill can seem difficult.

PMA, however, have developed a broad range of systems which exhibit high resistance to UV, and remain unaffected chemically by either sand or salt. PA12 Black is one ‘super’ material which has been trialled under such conditions.

PMA has conducted a series of tests on their specially modified PA12 material to investigate the resistance of their polyamide conduits and fittings within a sand storm. The tests involved the use of a quartz sand blasting machine to simulate the extremities of such weather conditions. Conduits and fittings were subjected for 60 seconds to a jet of sand from such a machine at distances of 10cm and 20cm and at pressures of 4 bar and 6 bar.

With these tests designed to represent a far higher level of exposure than could ever be seen in the desert, the naturally occurring wind speeds and number of impacting grains of sand would be many factors lower in a real sand storm than simulated in this test. Since a real sand storm in the desert does not produce such intense local exposure at a single point and the grains of sand are likely to be much finer than the quartz sand used for the experiment, scientist concluded that a sand storm would be unlikely to cause any deterioration to PMA polyamide cable protection parts.

Philip Allington, PMA’s Application & Development Manager commented: “PMA PCS PA12 material has excellent abrasion and UV resistance characteristics. This conduit type is extremely tough and its material possesses very good damping characteristics. PCS will also resist well to the low humidity, which could cause some materials to become brittle. Combined with a high wall thickness, PCS is an ideal choice for applications in the desert.”
